Recap of the 2025 NCAA Championships by The Stride Report. They cover the women's team race from 14:45-23:40 in this video. They say that with Laurie Henes winning her 4th National Title (and 4th in the last 5 years), that she is "among the all time greats" of NCAA cross country coaches.

Looking ahead to next year...

Grace Hartman said in interviews a couple times over the last week surrounding the national championship race that the team talks about how they believe they have enough talent on their roster to field two nationally competitive teams.

The last two recruiting classes have been stellar, and they redshirted two of those stud true freshman recruits this fall: Emily Wisniewski and Alexa Dow. Wisniewski finished 3rd at 2023 Nike Cross Nationals and 16th at 2024 Nike Cross Nationals. Alexa Dow won the U18 Canadian Cross Country Championship in 2024. Daniela Scheffler was another true freshman big-time recruit in the 2025 class, who finished 10th at 2024 Nike Cross Nationals. And they apparently redshirted Ellie Shea this fall, who has a ton of potential.

Briley Bickerstaff made major improvements this fall, for instance finishing 34th in the Southeast Region race in a time of 20:19, only 8 seconds behind Fleur Templier. The graduate transfer Kaylie Armitage did not race for us this fall, but appears to have one year of cross country eligibility left (she finished 13th at the 2023 Southeast Region race and 18th at the 2024 Southeast Region race)

The 2026 roster includes the following who project to be major contributors with potential to make the top 7:

Grace Hartman
Hannah Gapes
Angelina Napoleon
Bethany Michalak
Sadie Engelhardt
Ellie Shea
Emily Wisniewski
Daniela Scheffler
Alexa Dow
Kaylie Armitage
Fleur Templier
Briley Bickerstaff

You also have Kate Putman and Jolena Quarzo possibly being in the mix.

Team will be absolutely loaded....and obvious that they could field two nationally competitive teams with their roster. It's possible that all 5 of our scorers from this year's national championship team could be legit "low sticks" (or at least top 20 at nationals) by next fall. And with injuries so prevalent in the sport, it's a luxury to have such loaded roster with tons of other talented runners for depth. You have to like our chances to win the national title again in 2026.

Surprised/disappointed no recognition of team at UNC game. Even if team was home for thanksgiving, not even a video tribute

The USA Cross Country Championships are being held today (Saturday, Dec 6th) in Portland, Oregon. Grace Hartman, Katelyn Tuohy, and Elly Henes are all entered. It is a 10k race. The top six finishers will qualify to represent the USA at the World Cross Country Championships to be held next month in Tallahassee, Florida (the first World XC Championships held on US Soil in 34 years).

Let's Run has a good preview article here. The men's and women's 10k races start at 3:55 pm ET.

The races will apparently be live streamed for free here.

I watched on the live stream. Grace Hartman finishes 6th at the USATF XC Championships and qualifies for the USA team for the World XC Championships. Parker Valby finished 10th, Elly Hennes 13th, and Katelyn Tuohy 16h. Amaras Tyynisma also was in the race and finished 26th. Valby and Tuohy hugged after finishing at the finish line, and of course Tuohy and Hartman had a big hug. Hartman was smiling big after finishing, and seemed thrilled with her performance.

Grace Hartman after finishing 6th at the USA XC Championships. She says the original plan (per Coach Henes) was for her to compete in this coming indoor season and redshirt outdoor track…and doesn't know if competing at the World XC Championship next month will change that plan or not.

Yesterday, Phoebe helped Great Britain and Northern Ireland to a second-place team finish at the European Cross Country Championships, finishing 16th individually and second among the GB & NI athletes.

AL signed yet another Kenyan, Sharon Kipchuma. So they presumably return 3 from top 20, plus Tuwei and now Sharon. I have a listing of almost 700 freshman (375 G, 300 B) to be by their new schools with prs if anyone has interest I can post.

We can get our first glimpse of Rachel Forsyth as a Wolfpack transfer this Thurs Jun 18th. She's competing in the Canadian Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Ottawa at 10:05 am (believe Ottawa and Raleigh are in the same time zone. There's a live webcast (not sure if there's a paywall…). Her seed time is 4:11.92.

Selfish me but the Adidas XC Challenge in Cary, NC is the same weekend on Sep 18th. Hannah is the defending champ and course record holder in 16:01.8.

Sadie Engelhardt was NC State's most-anticipated freshman, regardless of sport. She backed it up over the last 9 months:

- 2x All-American
- 2x ACC Freshman of Year
- 2 ACC records
- Indoor ACC mile champ
- Team XC NCAA title

We "dodged" a major threat to our 2026 XC season. Joshua Grenade and The Stride Report just announced that OkSt's Isca Chelangat (7th at XC nationals; 15:07.76 for 5k) transferred NOT to Iowa State but to Arkansas. Iowa State already has 4 low-sticks (Kipkore, Kibet, Kirwa, and Longisa) and need just a top 50 runner to be the favorite. Transfer portal is now closed; hoping no new surprises.

If our top 5 at XC nationals return, are healthy, and fit we will most likely be the preseason favorite. Positives for us is We have depth now with the great improvements from Daniela Scheffler and Emily Wisnieski (both breaking 16:00 in the 5k), the addition of Rachel Forsyth, and yet another great recruiting class.

Awesome that we are doing it with American athletes as well (like BYU), and not with a roster of a bunch of 23 year old semi-pro "freshman" from Kenya like these other teams. Hopefully the NCAA is adopting a new age cap rule to deal with that. Otherwise, fan interest in some sports like cross country will decline.
