Jim Jones was a lifelong fanatical communist. He founded his "church" in order to further his Marxist agenda. It had nothing to do with belief in God or Christianity.
Jones said from the pulpit "there is no God" and that "socialism is God" (direct quotes). See following video of his sermon explicitly saying this.
He founded "Jonestown" in Guyana as a place to for his followers to establish a "commune" and implement a socialist "utopia".
"Ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you." - John 15:19
Jim Jones' church wasn't even remotely "Christian", and his followers ("church" members) all knew it. It was openly atheistic. It was a meeting of socialists-communists, with Jones preaching the "religion" of "creating a utopia on earth without God".
See the following YouTube video for video and audio of Jones saying the following direct quotes….and his followers cheering and raising the communist fist when he preached from the pulpit that "there is no God. Socialism is god" (also in video in my previous post).
He was openly ANTAGONISTIC in the pulpit towards God, Christianity, and the Bible.
He said from the pulpit "have nothing to do with that Sky God, have nothing to do with that Bible".
Jones said from the pulpit that "he came in the phenomena of religion to get people OUT of religion". This is what Karl Marx himself taught, saying that "religion is the opiate of the masses".
Jones also said from the pulpit "there is no Heaven up there" (above the sky, per the Bible), and that "we'll have to make heaven down here" (on the earth).
In another audio recording (in following video), Jones explicitly says of himself and his followers that "we are atheists" and that "I've ****ted on the Bible".
Jones also said "I wish you would call me the Devil, because he had the good sense to rebel" (direct quote with audio in following video). This reminds me of how the communist Saul Alinsky on one of the pages near the beginning of his book "Rules For Radicals", he dedicates the book to Satan, acknowledging "Lucifer, the first radical".

I was in the tenth grade that year, it dominated the newspapers for days. I'm just now realizing that what was so shocking back then, would be just one more weird event in today's crazy world. In upstate New York where I grew up, it superseded what had been the previous long-running news story about a place called Love Canal.
Good short video here with audio of Jim Jones and his followers. They were promoting "Democratic Socialism" (using that exact terminology) back in the 70s. He and his followers were obsessed with promoting "Marxist-Leninist" ideology (openly using that terminology) and constantly talking about "Revolution", including using violence to obtain that revolution.
Jones says, quote, to let it be known that "The United States government was not our mother, but that the Soviet Union was our spiritual motherland". They had a delegation from the Soviet Union embassy visit them in Jonestown.
Notably, there is audio here of Jones speaking a few weeks before the mass suicide in Jonestown to an assembly of the people in Jonestown where he says to them "Revolutionary suicide would be the best service we could render the cause of the international Marxist-Leninist struggle." He then asks for a "Yay" or "Nay" vote from the people on whether they agree to commit suicide, and the "Yays" are unanimous, with raucous cheering in favor of suicide.
Then there is audio of Jones promoting the murder of the US Congressman….prior to his murder.
